There were two elements to resolve this, neither had any relevance with the type of PC being used. The first thing to do (as mentioned above) was to re-log the X10 back into my home wireless internet connection - it had dropped out at some stage.
Having thus connected it back to the Internet the X10 Database was visible on the MAC PC screen (using SAFARI) but I couldn't do anything with it.
The Cocktail X10 helpline suggested using a different browser, so I changed from using SAFARI to FIREFOx - Bingo, the X10 Database opened up and was then fully functional.
Subsequently I have reverted to using SAFARI and the X10 DB works perfectly in there too. Easy when you know how but worrying for a non-tekkie like me at the time!
